Customer Book Review of “Strangers in Another Country” by Lawrence G. Taylor
Ordering this book and opening it up felt a bit like Christmas, my birthday and Easter all rolled into one. I hadn’t realized it was technically four books in one– two short stories and two novellas—when I ordered it.
Every new story was better than the last! It was a wonderful reading experience. Without going into too much detail and spoiling anything, the stories all revolve around different West Indian characters moving to Europe to make new lives for themselves.
All of the stories take place in the 1960’s which adds an extra element of historical interest and a lot of beautiful atmosphere.
I think probably the main point of this collection was to address the discrimination that West Indians faced in places like London in the 1960’s (and still face today, lets be honest). The author made this issue very real and almost uncomfortable at times. I feel like they said what needed to be said in that area.
All in all, this collection is alternatively hopeful, touching, funny, powerful, saddening, sweet, infuriating and so many other emotions that you hope to feel when you pick up a book. Would recommend to anyone who likes period pieces and social commentary. 5 stars!
